Those that survive without difficulty, join a privileged class of humans that are allowed to explore outside. Those that fail and return early are confined to a life underground, working in the factories. The two classes are not allowed to interbreed.

The drones attach themselves to cars that have signed up for a service that pays them to allow drones to attach to their vehicles. The drones know the vehicles intended route, and optimize their travel based on this data. Later vehicles add charging ports for drones.
Drones can attach themselves to airlines to travel across country. airlines have started making special areas of the plane where drones can attach.

Parents very privately teach their children to eat by trying to explain, not showing, that would be considered criminal. Children eat in isolation and the society acts as if children don't eat at all.

Jesus is reborn, with the intention of saving humanity. As he grows, Jesus is bullied and intimidated for expressing compassion toward others. Abused throughout his life, he decides to take his own life and end his suffering, rather than save humanity, which he feels, does not deserve saving.

When hydrogen fuel cell powered cars, carrying people, show up at the event, they plug into the hydrogen power system. Each vehicle being refueled and used to produce extra power for the event.
While the event space sits idle, it produces energy for the local community.
At home, the vehicle connects to the home energy grid. A sort of mobile battery.
