Matriarchy is the practice of matriarchal cultures. It is in almost every conceivable way the opposite of patriarchal forms of cultural organization. Instead of dictatorial rule by authoritarian social structures, it is egalitarian based on consensus decision making. Where patriarchy relies on a market economy, matriarchal societies practice gift economy. where patriarchal cultures define human nature as self interest and competition, matriarchal cultures are community focused around cooperation and sharing.
